Fresh From the Southwest: The Wise Ox Opens, Halloween Weekend & the Holiday Kickoff
This is my fresh October 22 update for the Southwest, and it is a good week to be a food lover here. Chef Brad Wise opens The Wise Ox butcher shop and deli at The UnCommons today, a Bangkok izakaya is on the way to South Decatur, Durango launches a free luxury car showcase this Sunday, and the holiday season starts to click into gear behind Halloween. I live in Rhodes Ranch, I drive this corridor every day, and I am telling you, the momentum here just keeps compounding.
Since my October 15 update, the poolside concert season wrapped at Durango, the Fresh52 farmers market circuit across Mountain’s Edge, Southern Highlands, and Rhodes Ranch is mapped for the rest of the fall, and STIX ASIA keeps climbing toward its winter opening. Here is everything fresh, in the order I would actually spend my weekend.

October is the busiest stretch on the Southwest calendar all year, and the week ahead stacks big food news on top of Halloween weekend. Here is the fresh stuff, straight from the corridor.
The Wise Ox Opens Today at The UnCommons
The newest table to watch is actually a butcher’s counter. The Wise Ox, Chef Brad Wise’s Southern California butcher shop and deli, opens today, Thursday, October 22, at The UnCommons. Expect house-cut curated meats, traditional butchery and dry-aging, a chef-driven sandwich menu, and a monthly 10-pound Ox Box meat subscription. It is Wise’s second off-Strip venture here, joining his Rare Society live-fire steakhouse in the same development, and for residents across Mountain’s Edge, Rhodes Ranch, and Southern Highlands it is one more sign that UnCommons keeps maturing into a full lifestyle district close to home.
Kiki Izakaya Is Coming to South Decatur
One for my Asian food people, and especially my Thai community: Kiki Izakaya, a Bangkok-based izakaya, has been announced for the Frias Shopping Center on South Decatur. It joins a corridor that is stacking Japanese-Thai crossover tables, from Kinzuu Izakaya on south Rainbow to the Weera Thai family’s kitchen, and it keeps proving what I tell every buyer: the Southwest now out-eats Summerlin, and the depth keeps growing. I will post the opening date the moment it is confirmed.
Durango: Motor Society Sunday, Comedy in November & the Expansion
The Bel-Aire Backyard poolside series wrapped in style with Switchfoot and Anberlin on October 17, and Durango is already shifting gears. This Sunday, October 25, the resort hosts the Durango Motor Society, a free luxury car showcase at Bel-Aire Backyard, the kind of low-key event that makes the whole corridor feel like a neighborhood. Then the Agave Ballroom picks up the entertainment baton: comedian Jimmy Failla plays Saturday, November 29, with two shows, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, a great date-night booking right before the holidays.
See Durango’s event calendarAnd the $385 million North Expansion keeps rising behind it: the 180,000-pound steel truss is in place, and the roughly 275,000-square-foot addition will bring about 400 new slots, a 36-lane bowling alley, luxury theaters, and Moonshine Flats, the 29,000-square-foot, two-story country music venue, with a late 2027 completion target. Every house I show near Durango, buyers ask about the expansion first.
Halloween Weekend Across the Southwest
Halloween lands Saturday, October 31, and the whole corridor leans in. The UnCommon Harvest Festival runs its final weekend October 30 and 31, 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Etho Park, with the pumpkin patch, vendors, games, and the petting zoo. Mountain’s Edge’s MEMA Trick-or-Treat Trail and community decorating contest are open to registrations now, and the neighborhoods across Rhodes Ranch and Southern Highlands fill with trunk-or-treat events posted on their community pages. If you are deciding between communities, the trick-or-treat trails are a great way to feel the family vibe firsthand.
Farmers Markets: The Full Fresh52 Circuit
Fall is peak season for the fresh markets, and all three of our communities run the Fresh52 Farmers & Artisan Markets year-round. Here is the whole map, no guesswork:
- Mountain’s Edge: Fresh52 at Exploration Peak Park (9275 S Buffalo Dr), 1st and 3rd Tuesdays, 2:00 to 7:00 PM.
- Southern Highlands: Fresh52 at the Corporate Center (11411 Southern Highlands Pkwy), 2nd and 4th Saturdays, 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, next up November 14 and November 28.
- Rhodes Ranch: Fresh52 at 133 W Rhodes Ranch Pkwy, 1st and 3rd Tuesdays, 3:00 to 7:00 PM, residents only.
- The UnCommons: the Sunday market keeps running, 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
The Southern Highlands edition is one of my favorites for strolling with a coffee, and the Mountain’s Edge market at Exploration Peak doubles as a park day for kids. Schedules can shift around holidays, so I confirm on the Fresh52 calendar before I head out.
STIX ASIA & the Lunar New Year Build-Up
The big one everyone asks about is still coming: STIX ASIA, the 18,000-square-foot Asian food hall from Waikiki at The UnCommons, is on track for a winter opening with about twelve stalls, live cooking stations, night markets, and Lunar New Year events planned once it is live. The first three concepts are confirmed, all first mainland U.S. locations: Ginza Bairin (the Tokyo tonkatsu house credited with inventing the katsu sandwich), Ramen Bario (Hakata-style tonkotsu with a broth simmered 20-plus hours), and Nanamusubi (organic Japanese rice balls). For the Thai, Japanese, and wider Asian community, this is shaping up to be the food destination of the year in the Southwest, and when the doors open I will post it the same day.
The Bend: What’s Open Now & the Happy Hour Board
The Bend keeps filling in at Sunset and Durango. Glass Box Sushi, the San Diego import, has been serving since late September, joining Marufuku Ramen, Lotus of Siam, Union Biscuit, Metro Sliceteria, Freed’s, and Mothership Coffee, with the luxury Galaxy Theatre and Electric Pickle’s nine-court pickleball complex still to come as the Phase 2 anchor.
Happy hour remains the move: Butcher & Thief runs daily deals 3:00 to 5:30 PM (Garage Beer at $4, draft wine at $6, well cocktails at $8, plus small plates like shishito peppers and cheesesteak egg rolls at $9), and Evolve Brewing pours with 50% off pizzas Monday through Friday, 4:00 to 6:00 PM. One walk down Sunset Road and you have a full night out.
Life Time, the Beltway & the Winter Build-Out
Behind the festivals, the Southwest keeps building. Life Time’s Durango club at 8555 West Sunset Road is officially slated to arrive in December as the company’s 200th location, 128,000 square feet across three stories with six indoor pickleball courts, resort pools, and a full spa. On the roads, the CC-215 widening from Charleston to Far Hills is adding a lane in each direction plus a new braided ramp, the Sunset and Durango on-ramp work is still mid-build with lane shifts through the fall, and Clark County’s signal and road upgrades on Warm Springs, Decatur, and Valley View continue through March 2027. Every lane shift is a bet on the corridor, and the corridor keeps cashing it.
I track all of it on the Events & Venues page and in my weekly updates, and the full community picture, including builders and schools, lives on my neighborhood guides.
From One Resident to Another
I will be at the UnCommons harvest weekend, I will be at the Motor Society car showcase on the 25th, and I will be first in line at the Southern Highlands and Mountain’s Edge markets all fall. If you are thinking about renting at Vestra, buying in Mountain’s Edge or Southern Highlands before the last lots are gone, or just want a personal tour of everything above, my door is open. English, Thai, or German.
